October 20, 2018

The weather gods were smiling as Mahopac Fire Dept. kicked off the 2018 Open House, and a full house it was. District residents were greeted by members of Mahopac Fire, EMS and Fire Police and invited to see what the FD has to offer, in addition to the many friends from neighboring agencies who have special talents and tools. MVFD EMS Co. had on display a new device, nicknamed "the Thumper", that does chest compressions for CPR, freeing up personnel to administer to the patient more closely. MVFD Rescue Co. pulled out the "Wow Factor" when they dismantled a car in minutes, opening it up so the EMTs' and Medics can get to a victim more quickly. Some of the departments showing off their specialties were the Mahopac Falls FD with their Dive Team and Safety Trailer that is a big hit when attending Fire Prevention displays at the Mahopac Elementary schools and district nursery schools, NY State Police with their K-9 unit and handler, Put. Co. Sheriff’s Office with officers helping parents to make sure infant car seats are properly installed and the ERT Response Vehicle, or as the kids call it "the Tank". Members from the Red Cross Disaster Team were out in full force answering questions as was a team from NYSE&G who helped people plan for the coming winter and what they need to be prepared. WHUD sent up Anthony and Jillian to let folks know that their station is there to help inform the public of school closings, up to date road closings and announcements for the safety of the public. The SPCA was there letting people how to protect our furry friends during winter months and EMStar was there to answer questions about the paramedic service in the county. Two almost forgotten units until they are needed are the Town of Carmel Highway and the Putnam County Hazmat team. For the Highway, they are instrumental during storms to keep roads open for the EMS, Fire and Police agencies to get through. The other is the Hazmat Team that recently came to the forefront at the County hazardous waste turn in. A dangerous situation was brought to a safe conclusion because of the expertise of the members of this team. Judge Jim Reitz and Assemblyman Kevin Byrne stopped by to show their support for their friends in the Fire Service. A great time was had by all who attended. Great job MVFD
