In consultation with our EMS personnel, the Firefighters discussed methods on how the victim receives immediate injury evaluation and first aid even while still trapped within the vehicle. As a standard procedure, tools are laid out early in the operation to make them readily available as needed. Wooden cribbing may be required to shore up and prevent movement of the vehicle and hydraulic tools for cutting and bending metal are made ready. The newest “Jaws of Life” are battery operated to provide quick maneuvering with no hydraulic hoses to wrestle with. Scene lighting is often used in remote locations as well as a pumper standing by to protect against the possibility of fire.
