On Monday May 21, 2018 firefighters held a “retirement” celebration for 2 of their front line apparatus. Both rigs were purchased by a fire apparatus dealer and removed from service tonight. Both Apparatus bodies were constructed with Stainless Steel by The Gowans Knight Company of Waterbury Connecticut on Simon Duplex cab/chassis, both having Detroit Diesel 8v-92 engines, Allison automatic transmissions, Waterous 2-Stage pumps and 2,500 gallon water tanks. State of the art apparatus at the time of purchase, the older of the 2, (formerly) 18-4-1 was purchased in 1992 to replace an aging 1972 Oren Tanker/Pumper (former 18-4-2). 18-4-2 was purchased in 1994 as an addition to the fleet to bolster response to the Southern side of the district which contains a lot of commercial occupancies and multiple family dwellings. Both units were purchased by an apparatus dealer whom will in turn check them over and re sell them. To date, we have located one of them which was purchased though a dealer network. 18-4-2 is now serving the residents of Cuba Illinois. They have begun making needed repairs, even giving it a new look. We know it will serve them well and look forward to continuing our newly formed relationship!!
