Menorah and Kinara safety tips to prevent a potential fire

1. Place your Menorah/Kinara on a sturdy, non-flammable surface: Your Menorah/Kinara , especially when lit, should rest on a stable fixture in your home. You and your family's guests may accidentally bump into a wobbly table and knock it over. Non-flammable surfaces like glass, metal, or marble work best.
2. Keep the Menorah/Kinara and matches out of children's reach: Make sure that your Menorah/Kinara is positioned in a place where your children can enjoy it, but is out of their reach so they don't hurt themselves. Be sure to store all matches and lighters safely after each candle lighting; kids may find them if left out.
3. Never leave a lit Menorah/Kinara unattended: All the excitement of the holidays can sometimes lead to carelessness. When burning, the Menorah/Kinara should always be under some sort of supervision.
4. Place Menorah/Kinara out of reach of pets: Furry friends are eager to join in on the holiday festivities. They could be drawn to the new object in your home and want to investigate, so keep it at a height where they can't get their paws on it.
5. Use only non-flammable Menorah/Kinara : This may seem like an obvious tip, but it's worth reiterating. Any ornamental menorahs made by your kids in arts and crafts should be admired, but not used in your Hanukkah/Kwanzaa ceremony.
6. Don't walk around with lit candles: Choose the area of your home where your Menorah/Kinara will be lit, then keep it there. Don't carry your menorah from room to room to avoid potentially dropping it.
7. Decorate with care: The area surrounding your menorah often receives extra decorations. That is absolutely fine, as long the adornments are non-flammable and not likely to tip over and displace the Menorah/Kinara .
8. Place your Menorah/Kinara in a secluded area of your home: You're already going to put your Menorah/Kinara out of reach of children and pets, but it's equally important to keep the Menorah/Kinara out of your home's general flow of traffic to avoid accidentally knocking it over.

Christmas tree safety tips to prevent a potential fire

1. Choose fresh over cheap and dry. The fresher the tree, the less likely it will pose a fire hazard. Look for flexible needles that don't break, and a trunk with sap.

2. Keep the water coming. The tree stand should contain a continuous source of water and be sturdy enough to resist toppling by kids or pets.

3. Don't choke the cord. Attach only three maximum strings of lights to any one-extension cord, then place cords along walls to prevent a tripping hazard. Never run them under rugs or carpets.

4. Trees don't need warmth. Keep the tree away from heat sources such as fireplaces, candles and even a TV.

5. Not any lights will do. Use low energy, safe lighting that's been certified by a safety testing lab. Don't use damaged or frayed cords.

6. Shut the lights. Never leave the lights on overnight. Same goes for any appliances not in use when you are home or away.

7. Don't keep a dry tree around. Dispose of it at this point properly. Don't even keep it in the garage.

8. Artificial tree safety awareness. Artificial trees should be flame resistant and have a seal for an approved safety-testing laboratory if the tree contains a built-in lighting set.

9. Death by artificial tree. If the tree is metal, never use electric lights, as they can charge the tree and lead to electrocution.

10. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Make sure everyone knows its location and how to use it.
